Hi Patriots Fans!
This past year, I was lucky enough to be able to spend one afternoon a week volunteering at Boston Children’s Hospital. Knowing that Boston Children’s Hospital is one of the highest-ranking pediatric hospitals in the country, I anticipated that volunteering in the hospital would be an amazing experience, it truly exceeded my expectations.
As a volunteer, I visited patients in their rooms to play games, do craft projects, watch movies, and keep them company. The patients and their families always thanked me for what I was doing, but really I got so much more from visiting them than I could have ever given to them. Their stories and their outlooks on life helped me to put my own life into perspective and to remember to always look for the silver lining.
One experience that was especially meaningful to me was visiting with a little girl and her father who had traveled across the country for care at Boston Children’s Hospital. The child had been hospitalized for weeks, was unable to walk, and could only speak a few words. My first reaction when I met her was to feel bad for her, but after spending some time with her and her father, I realized that she was one of the most vibrant and happiest children I had ever meet. I loved visiting her each week, watching her face light up as we talked about her favorite movie characters, her boyfriend at school, and her new nail polish color. When I have hard days, I always think back to her and her love of life despite all the difficulties she faces every day, and I am reminded that you can always find something to smile about.
I am so thankful for the opportunity to volunteer at Boston Children’s Hospital and I’m looking forward to more rewarding volunteer opportunities in the future. Kristen
