News Blitz 4/2: Miles Austin, Owen Daniels among Patriots remaining free agent options

Posted Apr 2, 2014

The Patriots.com News Blitz gets you up-to-date on the latest Patriots news from local and national media.

Doug Kyed of NESN.com writes that RB Michael Bush, WR Miles Austin, TE Owen Daniels and LB James Anderson are the remaining low-risk free agent options for the Patriots.

"Austin recently has been plagued by hamstring injuries, which led to a 24-catch, 244-yard season with the Dallas Cowboys in 2013," adds Kyed.

"A healthy season could boost the Patriots’ receiving corps, but Austin is a long way from his breakout 2009 campaign." READ MORE>>

Erik Frenz of Boston.com shares his latest 2014 Patriots mock draft and has New England selecting Florida State DT Timmy Jernigan with the 29th overall pick in the first round.

"There are still some holes in his game, and his short arms (31 ⅝ inches) put him at a disadvantage when he's trying to shed blocks," notes Frenz. "He already has a number of moves that help him prevent offensive linemen from getting their hands on him, though, so he should be ready to start from opening day." READ MORE>>

Shaun King of Yahoo Sports shares his mock draft 2.0 and has the Patriots selecting Alabama LB CJ Mosley in the first round.

"Bill Belichick replaces Brandon Spikes with this rookie," writes King. "This pick also allows Jamie Collins to move outside where he can be better utilized." READ MORE>>

Doug Farrar of Sports Illustrated has come out with his mock draft 3.0 and has the Patriots selecting North Carolina TE Eric Ebron in the first round.

"Ebron isn't a traditional inline blocker, but he looks pretty good when coming out of a blocking stance, and his primary assignment in college was to catch the ball — which he did 62 times for 973 yards in 2013," writes Farrar. "And at 6-4 and 250 pounds, with legitimate 4.6 speed on the field, Ebron has the kind of tape the Patriots would find interesting given their obvious needs at tight end — whether Ebron’s a “pain in the butt” or not." Rob Rang of CBSSports.com also shares his latest mock draft, and has the Patriots selecting Louisville FS Calvin Pryor.

"While perhaps not as fluid in coverage as Alabama's Clinton-Dix, Pryor ranks as the top safety in the 2014 draft for many scouts, including myself," writes Rang. "Instinctive, physical and possessing good hands for the interception, Pryor would be an intriguing fit for a Patriots' squad needing help at strong safety after releasing two-year starter Steve Gregory."
