News Blitz 4/8: Matthew Mulligan visits the Bears

Posted Apr 8, 2014

The Patriots.com News Blitz gets you up-to-date on the latest Patriots news from local and national media.

Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune reports that Patriots free agent TE Matthew Mulligan visited with the Chicago Bears on Monday.

Mike Reiss of ESPNBoston.com writes that TE Owen Daniels had a free agent visit with the Patriots this offseason before signing with the Baltimore Ravens, according to a report from ESPN.com NFL Nation Houston Texans reporter Tania Ganguli.

"The Patriots' visit with the 31-year-old Daniels highlights part of the team's thinking when it comes to the "move" tight end position," adds Reiss. "D.J. Williams is the top option on the current depth chart, and there is a possibility that the club could look at first-year receiver Mark Harrison in that type of role." READ MORE>>

Jeff Howe of the Boston Herald shares how Patriots CB Alfonzo Dennard is preparing his cousin - Michigan State CB Darqueze Dennard - for the NFL as he continues the pre-draft process.

"Dennard, a strong, 5-foot-11, 199-pounder, is known for his man coverage skills. He visited the Steelers last week and has official pre-draft trips on tap with the Jets, Bengals and Rams," writes Howe. "Though it’s unlikely the Dennard cousins will reunite in New England, the Patriots met with Darqueze Dennard at the combine, a month before signing cornerbacks Darrelle Revis and Brandon Browner. Dennard boasted an ability to play safety, so he could be an option for the Pats if he slides to the 29th pick." READ MORE>>

Nick O'Malley of The Republican writes how Florida DT Dominique Easley could fit into the Patriots draft plans during rounds 1-2 this May.

"Easley would add another dimension to the New England pass rush, giving them someone who can collapse the pocket from the inside, something that Patriots fans have seen the Muhammed Wilkersons, J.J. Watts and Jurrell Casey's of the league (10.5 sacks each last year) do for other teams so well," writes O'Malley. "If the Patriots defense is going to actually make a jump, they need a guy like Easley." READ MORE>>

Meredith Perri of WEEI.com takes a close look at LSU WR Odell Beckham Jr. and shares why he could be a draft option for the Patriots during the first two rounds.

"Beckham is a quick, fluid player who has solid vision of the field," writes Perri. "Analysts note that he does not have elite speed and can be inconsistent at times. He helped his cause at the NFL combine when he was a top performer in the 20-yard shuttle (3.94 seconds) and 60-yard shuttle (10.93 seconds)." READ MORE>>
