News Blitz 7/3: Chandler Jones could be in for a breakout season

Posted Jul 3, 2014

The Patriots.com News Blitz gets you up-to-date on the latest Patriots news from local and national media.

Mike Reiss of ESPN Boston believes that Derrelle Revis could be directly linked to a breakout season for Chandler Jones, as the third-year defensive end might benefit from better coverage.

"He had six sacks as a rookie and followed that up with 11.5 last season," adds Reiss. "Could he hit 15 this season? As long as he stays healthy, it wouldn't surprise me." READ MORE>>

Sean Leahy of the Boston Globe believes there is still a sizable talent gap between the Patriots and the rest of the AFC East.

"While all three have pockets of optimism they can build around (Ryan Tannehill’s 32 straight starts are a sign the Dolphins might finally have the stable quarterback they've spent a generation seeking; the Jets have bolstered a roster that overachieved at 8-8 last season; and the Bills added playmaking receiver Sammy Watkins, who they hope can help them be more competitive in shootouts with Brady), there’s still a sizable talent gap between the Patriots and their division rivals," writes Leahy. "That’s especially glaring at quarterback, and New England’s divisional dominance may not end until that gap under center changes." READ MORE>>

Nick Underhill of MassLive.com continues to rank his Top 10 Patriots and tabs DT Vince Wilfork as No. 8 on the list.

"Will he return to being one of the league’s most imposing defensive tackles now that he’s all patched up? Or will he be slow to return to form? Those are questions that cannot yet be answered," writes Underhill. READ MORE>>

NFL.com ranks the Patriots vs. Saints game from Week 6 last season as the second best game of 2013.

"Brady to Thompkins, 5 seconds left, game over. The play was so incredible that a local radio announcer shouted 'Unicorns! Show ponies! Where's the beef?' in exultation after the touchdown." READ MORE>>

Joel Corry of CBS Sports tabs Rob Gronkowski and Darrelle Revis as Patriots who are heading towards contract crossroads.

"Gronkowski is the best tight end in the NFL when healthy but has missed 14 regular-season games over the last two years because of back, forearm and knee injuries," writes Corry. "The Patriots have until the last day of the 2015 league year to pay him a $10 million option bonus to pick up his 2016 through 2019 contract years. A decision on Gronkowski's future with the Patriots may come much sooner if he can't stay on the field in 2014." READ MORE>>
