Patrick Chung Press Conference Transcript

Posted Jan 5, 2012

New England Patriots safety Patrick Chung addresses the media during his press conference at Gillette Stadium on Thursday, January 5, 2012.

Q: What have you learned from your playoff experiences that will help you going forward into this game?

PC: Not looking forward. Just taking it day-by-day, preparing for everybody, everything, every obstacle that might come ahead and just preparing for that and just get ready for it. Take it day-by-day.

Q: How have you rebounded this week from playing your first game since injuring your foot?

PC: Oh, yeah I was fine, I was fine after the game. We're all good, you know we got these couple days off to whatever pain we might have to take care of those and get rid of those little aches and pains and now it's just ‘go' time. So, it's just good to have that bye week.

Q: Sterling Moore and Antwaun Molden are more new faces in the secondary. How do you think they've been? Moore, especially because he's been on-and-off the roster.

PC: He [Sterling Moore] had two interceptions and Antwaun [Molden] had one, so you can say they're helping a little bit, so I mean we have confidence with anybody back there, man, anybody. We have a lot of athletes back there, so now we're just working to take it one game at a time.

Q: You've never been in Sterling Moore's position before. Do you appreciate how rewarding his game was on Sunday?

PC: Oh yeah, mental toughness. You know, going through stuff like that, you know on-and-off, on-and-off, on-and-off, it's kind of just being strong and waiting for your turn and he waited for his turn and he balled out, so I mean hats off to him for being mentally tough like that.

Q: Vince Wilfork and Jerod Mayo talked yesterday a little bit about the mental toughness overall of this team. You've been here a couple years now, do you feel this top to bottom roster has a fight in it that maybe was lacking in other teams recently?

PC: I mean other teams – that's the past, man. All I can think about is the team that we have now and right now, I would say that we're mentally tough. You know we've started bad games and ended good which is huge mental toughness to finish the game and play a full 60 minutes. We've had a couple of those games where we've showed that we had that. I can't speak about other teams, but this team right here, I feel we have a lot of mental toughness and it can only get better. I'm not saying we're perfect, I'm not saying we're great, but it can always get better, no matter what.

Q: Will you be lobbying to keep Devin McCourty with you at safety or does it matter?

PC: No, it doesn't matter, man. I mean I have full confidence in everybody. If Devin's back there he's going to ball and if Dig [James Ihedigbo] is back there he's going to ball, if Sergio's [Brown] back there he's going to ball. I'm not really worried about who's back there man, just worried about collectively playing as a team.

Q: Do you feel like you guys have made good strides this week? It seems like there is much more of a focus on you guys because you don't know who your opponent is.

PC: Yeah, I mean just working on the things that we have trouble with, working on the things that we're good at. You know, just bettering ourselves I feel. I mean, it's too far too tell. We're just really taking it one day at a time. We cannot look forward.

Q:  Did you figure out how not to get into a 21 or 17 point hole?

PC: I mean we're not going to figure that out until game time, so those are things that we've got to work on and we're working on them.

Q: When you talk to a rookie or a younger guy about how playoff football changes as opposed to regular season football. What are some of the things you would tell them?

PC: Honestly, prepare for the game like it's a regular game you're trying to win. You can't get too hyped about it because if you get too hyped you might get too antsy and then you never know what might happen, but if you have the same preparation that you do week-in-and-week-out and just take it as a game that we have to win just like every other week then that's the best advice I can give them. Just relax and let the game come to you.

Q: Did you have to learn that lesson?

PC: Yeah, because I'm just straight Energizer Bunny out there, so they try to tell me just to relax and let the game come to you. I finally realized that great advice, so that's the one thing I'll tell a rookie coming in, ‘Just play your game and don't worry about all the other hype and everything else that's going on around you.'

Q:  Who gave you that advice?

PC: [Tedy] Bruschi, [Jerod] Mayo, [and] Junior [Seau], guys that have been there, that have been in playoff games throughout their careers – just listening to those guys.
