Patriots.com News Blitz - 2/4/2013

Posted Feb 4, 2013

The Patriots.com News Blitz gets you up to date with the latest news from local and national media.

Tom E. Curran of CSNNE.com reports from Robert Kraft's meeting with the media in New Orleans this weekend. The Patriots Owner and CEO discussed a variety of topics - including Tom Brady - who is signed through 2014. "I think he had a remarkable year this year and I think we look at each year as it happens," Kraft said. "I'd love him to be here as long as he's productive and feels he wants to play."

Gregg Rosenthal of NFL.com also discusses recent comments from Patriots Owner and CEO Robert Kraft on impending free-agent wide receiver Wes Welker. "I'd love him to be around, he's a great guy," Patriots owner Robert Kraft told reporters on Friday. "I think Wes wants to be with us and we want him here so it's just a matter of whether both sides can be intelligent."

Mike Reiss of ESPNBoston.com writes that the Patriots are one of eight candidates to play in the NFL regular season opener at Baltimore on Thursday, September 5. While it's not a lock, Reiss believes the game has to be viewed as a top candidate. "It is traditionally a tough game for the road team to win, in part because of the emotions of the night with the defending champions in their own stadium and celebrating their previous accomplishment one final time," he adds.

Christopher Price of WEEI.com believes that after watching the Super Bowl, it's evident the Patriots need a wide receiver with the ability to spread the field in order to keep up with teams like the Ravens and 49ers next season. "New England must determine whether or not it can compete with teams like San Francisco and Baltimore without a dynamic, home run-hitting offense predicated not just on Tom Brady’s ability to sync up with his receivers on short and intermediate passing routes, but also on the ability to go deep," writes Price.
